Transforming Pennsylvania's Environmental Landscape with the Environmental Movement Assembly (EMA)

Pennsylvania stands at a pivotal crossroads in its environmental journey. As climate change accelerates and negligent industrial practices leave their mark, communities across the state are feeling the strain on their health, environment, and way of life. In this challenging time, unity and collaboration have never been more crucial. That is why the creation of an exciting new initiative - the Environmental Movement Assembly (EMA) - is more important now than ever.

As the new Policy and Program Coordinator for Physicians for Social Responsibility of Pennsylvania (PSR PA), I have been entrusted with leading the creation of the EMA. This initiative, inspired by the People’s Movement Assembly model and the groundbreaking work from Gulf South to Appalachia, aims to unify grassroots organizations and advocates across Pennsylvania. By coming together, we can identify shared goals, amplify our collective impact, and strategize for meaningful, systemic change.

Why EMA, Why Now?

Pennsylvania’s environmental challenges are vast, from landfill pollution and power plants to the unchecked expansion of solar farms on usable farmland, and LNG infrastructure. Issues like these are compounded by the pervasive corruption often found in industry practices and the deceptive narratives they use to justify harm. These challenges demand a coordinated response, and that’s where the EMA comes in.

The mission of the EMA is to:

  • Build rather than fight: While advocacy often focuses on combating harmful practices, EMA emphasizes constructive solutions that direct industries toward clean energy and environmental stewardship.

  • Unify fragmented efforts: Many small groups working on climate and environmental issues are stretched too thin. EMA provides a platform for collaboration and support, reducing duplication and enhancing the effectiveness of everyone involved.

  • Educate and empower: From engaging youth on climate, race, and social justice to educating on governmental processes, to sharing insights on the impacts of toxic industries, the EMA aims to inform and inspire the next generation of environmental advocates.

Building a Better Future Together

The EMA isn’t just a movement—it’s a collective. Our work in Pennsylvania is not without its challenges. But as we’ve seen in discussions leading up to this initiative, the resolve of our communities remains unshaken. Whether addressing landfill pollution, mitigating the impact of toxic industries, or advocating for environmental justice, the EMA is committed to creating a healthier, more equitable future.

Together, we can ensure that all Pennsylvanians enjoy their constitutional right to clean air, pure water, and a healthy environment.
